BEWARE: Podcasts for health are addictive!!

Quite some time ago I got sick of my Sirius Satellite radio. Local FM radio offered me nothing but I did find a few shows on AM radio that interested me. It was national politics mostly with a light sprinkling of local or regional news. That got old pretty quick because I align with the libertarians more often than not so the nonsense (IMO) that I was hearing just got old and frustrating. Then I found Stitcher.com. by suggestion of a good friend of mine. I'm sure other podcast sites are available but I know nothing of them as I have not needed any audio entertainment from anything but Stitcher, sort of. For those who aren't familiar, a Podcast is essentially a the same thing as a radio show with far fewer if any commercials. Some people put out 30 minute shows while others put out multi hour long shows. Some put out a new show everyday others are random and sporadic. I don't listen to any music shows although I have listened to "The Podrunner" which is a music show that plays techno music at a very specific beat per minute so you can train to run at that beat. I like the talk shows that both entertain and inform and I think I have found some of the most cutting edge information on health  & overall wellness just by turning on my smartphone or laptop.  I listen to shows on trail running, ultrarunning, triathalons, endurance sports in general, nutrition, diet and the list could go on and on. Take a look at the list below and give a listen to a few of these. They are great for long commutes!

Almost all of these Podcasts can be found on Stitcher.com. The only ones that are not available are Talk Ultra with Ian Corless and the entire Marathon Talk family of shows. I have included a link to where each podcast can be found just in case you haven't downloaded Stitcher yet. I highly encourage you to make a playlist of your favorites on Stitcher and enjoy your own personalized radio station.

Ben Greenfield fitness podcast: Ben hosts this highly popular fitness, nutrition and wellness  show over at his website at Bengreenfieldfitness.com, which features blogs, podcasts, and product reviews from Ben. He is a frequent contributor to Triathlete magazine and LAVA magazine, Endurance Planet (see below), the outdoor sports magazine OutThere Monthly and has been featured in WebMD, the Spokesman-Review, Inlander magazine, In-Health magazine, Fit-Pro magazine, PTontheNet, Prevention magazine, Women’s Running magazine, and Inside Triathlon magazine. Ben also has degrees, certificates and a deep resume to back up his knowledge. Ben is a self described "Bio-Hacker" who is well versed in sports nutrition. This is one of my go to shows because this guy is flat out fascinating.

The Joe Rogan Experience: The Joe Rogan of television and movie fame has his own podcast and it is incredible. I'm compelled to warn you that it is definitely not child friendly so be careful when you're in the car with the kids! Joe has guests on from all facets of life but when it is a fitness or nutrition based show it is always really compelling. I have listened to a few of his shows multiple times like his interview with Tate Fletcher and Dave Asprey or his show featuring Kelly Starett. Go to http://joerogan.net/ and check it out.

Endurance Planet: Hosted by Tawnee Prazak this show is all about exercise and nutrition for the endurance athlete. The show is owned by Ben Greenfield so of course he is a guest once a week who comes on to answer all of the questions they get about training, eating, dieting and bio-hacking for ultimate performance. If you have heard the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast and liked it than this is just one more way to get more of the same. Tawnee Prazak is primarily a triathalon athlete and private coach. Another guest she has on once a week, Lucho, is also a private coach and they do a show called ask the coaches. Ironman may be sport #1 for this show but sport #2 is ultrarunning and I would say the subjects covered and information given is interchangeable no matter what your endurance drug of choice is. Take a listen over at www.enduranceplanet.com.

Trail Runner Nation: In the world of trail utrarunning this is one of the most well known podcasts on the subject. The show is co-hosted by Don Freeman, Scott Warr and Faith Goss. They bring in the top athletes and coaches and interview them in a relaxed conversational kind of way. James Wilie tests trail gear and reports about it on the podcast. Tim Smith works with the website and helps facilitate conversation as well. I believe every single one of these podcasters is a seasoned ultra runner or at least a well versed trail runner and that makes the show real. They've been there and done that and so has the incredible guests they talk to. Check them out at http://trailrunnernation.com/the-nation/

Ultra Runner Podcasts: This is probably the other most well known podcast on ultrarunning. Co-Hosted by Scotty Sandow & Eric Schranz these guys are both ultra runners who compete in races all over the place. Recently this show has been hitting grand slams with guests like Sage Canaday, Karl Meltzer & Dylan Bowman. Every time a new episode comes online I listen to it right away. Hear them for yourself at http://ultrarunnerpodcast.com/category/podcasts/

The Rich Roll Podcast: Rich Roll is an amazing tri-athlete with a crazy life story. From his website http://www.richroll.com it says.... To celebrate his 40th natal birthday as well as his 10th anniversary in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, in 2006 he overhauled his diet, became a dedicated vegan, put on his running shoes and jumped back into the pool.It wasn’t long before ambition took hold and his quest to participate in Ultraman slowly began. Two years later and close to 50 pounds lighter, he surprised the triathlon & ultra communities by not only becoming the first vegan to complete the event, but by finishing in the top 10 males, despite never having even previously competed in a single ironman distance event. Rich's recent book Finding Ultra is enjoying wild success on the NY Times best seller list. I highly suggest you tune in to this if you are a plant powered athlete.

Talk Ultra: Hosted by Ian Corless is all about ultrarunning and is slightly different from the other shows because it talks about and features a lot of the great European athletes, races and racing federations like the International Skyrunning Federation. This show was a spin off from the original MarathonTalk podcast and was originally hosted by Ian Sharman and co-hosted by Ian Corless. Mr Sharman has moved on to amazing success in the world of ultra running and Mr Corless has stepped up to be the lone voice of this podcast. You don't get a lot of "how to" info on this show. It is more of a magazine that follows ALL aspects of the ultrarunning scene. Check it out at http://iancorless.org/podcast/

Embrace Running: San Francisco Bay Area based, middle of the pack runners Mark & Elena are a great change of pace (pun intended). They talk about their past week of training to start the show and you immediately realize you are listening to people who are more like you as opposed to super athletes that are admirable but rather unrelatable. After they recap the week they then go over the local race scene (both trail & road) and then they cover the big running stories of the week. Could be anything from major race results like the Boston Marathon or trending articles from Runners World Magazine or really just about anything. They have a delivery style that would make an awesome SNL skit. Remember the mock NPR show that Saturday Night Live use to do??? This is unintentionally similar. Check them out at: www.embracerunning.com.

Marathon Training Academy: This podcast is hosted by the husband and wife team of Trevor & Angie from Missouri. She is a registered nurse and an RRCA certified running coach. He is a self described "technical guy" behind the podcast and I'm not certain if he means technical info on running or technical info on podcasting. I suspect the later. This is a good show mostly because of Angie and her expertise but one thing I have noticed is a lot of her advice and positions are old school traditional positions, some that I don't particularly subscribe too but to each their own. They have over a million podcast downloads so clearly they have a following. If you are a runner with family and work obligations this podcast will likely appeal to you. Check them out at: http://marathontrainingacademy.com/

Dirt Dawg's Running Diatribe: From the header on his podbean site: "A father, husband and guy who simply likes to run…..marathons and ultras mainly". That really does sum up the show in my opinion but what do I know. I have only heard 1 episode. He seems to put out a show about every 6 weeks or so, at least that's what I noticed. I see that he has been putting these podcasts out since early 2009 so apparently he has a following or else he likely wouldn't keep this up for multiple years. I noticed "Dirt Dawg" is a blogger as well and it looks like he has been publishing that since 2007. That means he has been passionate about running for quite some time. See what pearls of wisdom you can glean from this show by listening to it at http://dirtdawg.podbean.com/

Angriest Trainer Podcast: Hosted by Vinnie Tortorich and co-hosted by Ana Vocino this is a great show and a train wreck all in one. Vinnie has a recently published book Fitness Confidential and this podcast was born as a way to promote that book. Vinnie is a personal trainer to the stars who doesn't hesitate to drop names and he is a well respected endurance athlete who has competed in major cycling events. Vinnie promotes a NSNG (No sugar, No Grain) diet that appeals to me, his knowledge seems deep and his delivery of the information isn't too geeky for the average Joe listener. I say it's a train wreck because the show is unusually "blue" (profanity/ sex talk) and Vinnie is uncomfortably politically incorrect in an almost stupid kind of way. His conversations will go from very interesting nutrition explanations to talk of two lesbians getting it on for no reason. It's absolutely bizarre and his use of curse words seem so unnecessary. Joe Rogan uses curse words but they don't stand out as awkward like these do on this show. Listen to this show. Seriously. It's good info but try to forgive the amateur styling as the show is relatively new and will likely get better over time. You can hear it at http://www.vinnietortorich.com/

Marathon Talk: For my European readers, both of you, this is the show for you. Marathon Talk is all about running in the UK. A weekly podcast dedicated to keeping you on the inside track to successful running. Presented by Martin Yelling and Tom Williams. Marathon Talk is so popular that it actual has a "family" of podcasts that fall under its canopy such as Talk Ultra (see above), Park Run and The Magic Mile. Check them all out at http://www.marathontalk.com/

Do you know of any podcasts that I should be listening to? I'm an addict to training and nutrition information so don't hold out on me. Share the knowledge!!!

  1. I was going to suggest Marathon Talk...I've just discovered it too and am addicted, I use it for my weekly long runs! I'm British too so it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy as well :) Thanks for the other recommendations!

The only other one that people have recommended (I haven't listened yet) is This American Life.
